Taipei, June 14 (CNA) Taiwan will extend its visa-waiver program for Philippine passport holders for another year starting Aug. 1, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said Friday night.
Lin made the announcement during a reception in Taipei marking the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) in Taiwan, according to a news release issued by Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
Lin was cited in the release as saying the decision reflected Taiwan's commitment to deepening exchanges with the Philippines, which he described as a key partner under its New Southbound Policy launched in 2016.
The minister also expressed hope that the Philippine government will reciprocate by granting visa-free treatment to Taiwan nationals.
Taiwan began offering 14-day visa waivers on a trial basis for travelers from Thailand, Brunei and the Philippines in August last year, as part of broader efforts to expand exchanges and attract more tourists.
According to Lin, the Philippines became Taiwan's largest source of tourists from Southeast Asia in 2024 and ranked fifth globally.
Speaking on regional security, Lin underscored the importance of Taiwan and the Philippines working together to support peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
MECO Chairperson and Resident Representative Cheloy E. Velicaria-Garafil echoed the sentiment, saying Taiwan and the Philippines are important partners in both economic and regional security affairs, the MOFA release said.
