Taipei, July 20 (CNA) Taiwanese taekwondoin Huang Ying-hsuan (黃映瑄) clinched a silver medal in the women's taekowndo under-46 kilogram kyorugi event at the 2025 Summer World University Games in Germany on Saturday (local time).
Kyorugi is the sparring discipline of Taekwondo in sports competitions.
Although she was on her way to winning a gold at the sparring event of her division, Huang was defeated by Korea's Kim Yun-seo 2-0.
While both taekowndoin went toe-to-toe with each other in the first round of the final match, Kim's quick attacks allowed her to take the first round 8-10.
Huang continued to fall behind Kim early in the second round as it opened to 0-6.
While Huang was able to narrow the score 4-8 through Kim's fouls, the Korean athlete then picked up her pace to bring the score to 7-22 before taking the entire match to win a gold medal.
Despite the loss, the medal marked Huang's second consecutive silver at the biennial sports competition, the first one being from the same division at the 2023 Summer World University Games in Chengdu, China.
Speaking with the press after bagging her silver medal, Huang said she had wanted to secure a gold medal but was unable to do so because she became more nervous in the latter part of the match.
Huang added that she received a lot of encouragement from Taiwanese supporters for her finals match, such as a text messages sent to her when it was early morning in Taiwan.
While her battle against Kim was difficult, Huang was able to take down most of her opponents with relative ease at the Universiade, such as the semifinals match where she defeated Italian taekwondoin Elisa Bertagnin with ease in a match that concluded 2-0.
Huang said she will continue to work hard in the future.
"My age will allow me to compete in the next edition. If I have the chance to represent Taiwan again, I hope to secure a gold," she said.
