The Taiwanese Canadian Association of Greater Vancouver organized a two-day signature campaign on August 9 and 10 to support Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations. This event showcased the determination of Taiwanese community groups to step beyond their own circles and integrate into mainstream society. Through face-to-face interactions, the campaign helped people from diverse backgrounds gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s multicultural identity and values.
The Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Vancouver also set up an exhibition booth at the venue to promote the “i Compatriot Card” and OCAC’s six major social media platforms (OCAC’s official Facebook, Instagram, X, OCAC E-News, YouTube channel, and LINE official account). This effectively serves as a mobile “Overseas Community Affairs Office,” allowing overseas compatriots to stay updated instantly on OCAC news and global diaspora developments.
Under the blazing sun, board members of the Taiwanese Canadian Association of Greater Vancouver engaged attendees one by one, introducing Taiwan’s soft power and cultural features. They called on the international community to acknowledge the democratic aspirations of Taiwan’s 23.5 million people and support Taiwan’s contributions within international organizations. Director Shu-Chen Kuo expressed her delight in seeing people from different ethnicities and language backgrounds pause to learn about Taiwan and show their support by signing the petition. She emphasized that such events not only increase Taiwan’s visibility internationally but also help more people understand the importance of Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations in a relaxed and interactive way.
A steady stream of visitors attended the event, with many overseas compatriots and Taiwan-Canada friends from various communities signing the petition board to show their support for Taiwan’s international participation. Local resident Tom and his girlfriend remarked after signing that they hope to have the opportunity to visit Taiwan in person to experience its culture and warm hospitality.
Notably, members of the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors (FASCA) in Greater Vancouver actively participated as volunteers, assisting overseas compatriots at the venue by explaining the functions and application process of the i Compatriot Card. The FASCA youth demonstrated their passion and initiative through friendly attitudes and fluent bilingual communication, helping more overseas compatriots of all ages understand and utilize OCAC’s services.
Many international supporters who signed also happily took photos with the staff. The two-day event concluded successfully amid warm exchanges and abundant support, showcasing the unity of the Greater Vancouver Taiwanese community. It added a strong voice advocating for Taiwan on the international stage, helping more people recognize Taiwan’s importance and positive image globally, while deepening ties within the overseas community.
