Magnitude 6.1 earthquake rocks southeastern Taiwan

Taipei, Dec. 24 (CNA) A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan at 5:47 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

The epicenter was located about 10.1 kilometers north of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 11.9 km, CWA data showed.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

The earthquake's intensity, which gauges the actual effects of a temblor, was highest in Taitung's Beinan Township, where it measured 5- on Taiwan's seven-tier intensity scale.

It measured 4 in other parts of Taitung, as well as in Hualien and Pingtung counties, and 3 in Kaohsiung, Tainan, Chiayi cities and Nantou, Chiayi, Yunlin and Changhua counties.
