Taipei, Jan. 5 (CNA) Taiwan People's Party (TPP) Chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) said Monday he has signed a resignation letter to implement the party's two-year term rule for at-large legislators.
Huang said his term at the Legislative Yuan, Taiwan's national parliament, will run until the end of January.
Other at-large legislators -- referring to those chosen from party lists rather than directly elected in cities or counties across Taiwan -- will also sign resignation letters under the same party rule, he said, which cuts the four-year legislative term in half and enables more TPP politicians to serve as lawmakers.
Huang said the resignations will be submitted on Jan. 31, allowing new lawmakers to take office on Feb. 1 at the earliest, after required procedures are completed by the Central Election Commission and the Ministry of the Interior.
Huang said the TPP must guard against risks, including uncertainty over how long any vacancy might last and whether "someone might take advantage of the situation."
As party chairman and caucus convenor, Huang will continue to participate in party caucus operations and attend regular Tuesday and Friday morning meetings, he said.
Huang made the remarks during an interview on "Who Comes to Breakfast" (誰來早餐), a Taiwanese show on the Stop Pretending YouTube channel.
Last month, Huang announced that he would run in the New Taipei mayoral election scheduled for Nov. 28 this year.
