NMTH launches digital database highlighting Taiwan in global history

The National Museum of Taiwan History (NMTH) has launched the “Overseas Historical Materials on Taiwan” portal, a free and open digital database that offers the public a global perspective on Taiwan’s history.

Currently in its first phase, the database features materials from 20 research projects and 18 publications, along with images of up to 700 artifacts. Users can search overseas materials related to Taiwan by entering a few keywords, with no registration required.

NMTH Director Chang Lung-chih (張隆志) noted that the database highlights Taiwan’s historical interactions with the world, spanning from 17th-century artifacts from the Netherlands and maps drawn by French military officers in the 19th century, to films shot in Taiwan by Japanese directors in the 20th century. These materials not only present Taiwan’s historical narratives but also help audiences better understand Taiwan’s role within global history.

NMTH emphasized that it will continue collaborating with international museums and institutions to expand the database, with the aim of further strengthening its role as a platform connecting Taiwan with the world.
