US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by phone ahead of Trump’s planned visit to Beijing in April. Readouts of the call show discussions ranging from trade and energy purchases to foreign policy issues including Ukraine, Iran and Taiwan. While Trump emphasized trade and broader foreign policy, China’s readout focused more heavily on Taiwan, including opposition to US arms sales. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te later said core positions on cross-strait relations and US policy remain unchanged.
