Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. His former aide Mark Simon says the case shows Hong Kong’s rule of law is gone. In a sit-down interview with TaiwanPlus, Simon, who is also listed as a co-conspirator in Lai’s case, says Lai’s age and physical condition after years in solitary confinement make 20 years “a death sentence.” He also says Taiwan should view what happened in Hong Kong as a warning about whether Beijing will honor any promises.
