Thailand isn't the only Asian country with mandatory military service, but its selection method is unique: conscripts are chosen by lottery. While some of those chosen accept this as a matter of fate, the system has its critics. And with a deadly conflict with neighboring Cambodia paused by a ceasefire, two years in the military not only threatens the earning potential of young Thai men, but also their lives.
