People should avoid dirinking tea and coffee immediately after having eaten a big meal, a nutritionist strongly warned yesterday.

Liao Ying-yin, a former nutritionist at the Tri-Service General Hospital, noted that the habit of drinking tea or coffee containing high levels of caffeine on a full stomach can cause anemia ─ a common blood disorder. The caffeine can work to inhibit the body's absorption of iron and the production of hemoglobin, the main compnent of healthy red blood cells, if people have the habit over a long period of time.

前三軍總醫院營養師廖英茵指出,茶或咖啡含有大量咖啡因,飯後胃中充滿食物,咖啡因恐造成貧血。長期養成飯後飲用含咖啡因飲料習慣,會抑制身體鐵質的吸收,及血紅素的生成。

She urged people not to have a cup of tea or coffee for at least two to three hours after each meal to avoid the onset of anemia.

想要避免貧血,廖英茵強調,飯後至少要間隔二至三個小時,才能喝咖啡或茶。

According to the Taipei Blood Center, about 6 percent on average of those willing to donate blood are unable to because of the symptoms related to coffee drinking soon after a big meal.

據台北捐血中心統計,在每天捐血的民眾中,有高達百分之六的比率,因血紅素不足無法捐血,而這些人「缺血」的原因,往往都是因為習慣飯後喝咖啡而導致。

Liao indicated that poor dietary habits, such as enjoying drinks with high levels of caffeine following a meal, is likely the main cause why more than a few people in Taipei are plagued by anemia.

廖英茵指出,台北人飲食習慣不良,常喜歡在飯後喝上含大量咖啡因的飲料,讓罹患貧血的機率大幅增加。

In addition, staying up late and drinking alcoholic beverages also have a negative impact on the absorption of iron, folic acid and B vitamins, leading to hemoglobin deficiency.

除此之外,常熬夜、喝酒的人,身體將不易吸收鐵質、葉酸、和維生素B群,導致血紅素的缺乏。

The dietician suggested that to prevent iron deficiency, people should establish healthy sleep habits, drink coffee or tea on an empty stomach and ingest more green vegetables, red beans and pork liver and other foods with high iron content.

營養師建議,為避免鐵質缺乏,民眾應維持正常作息,於空胃時,再喝咖啡或茶,平常也可以多攝取綠葉蔬菜、紅豆、豬肝等富含鐵質食物。
