Chen graduated from National Taiwan University with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1992. She received her doctorate in physiochemistry from Iowa State University in 1997.

She did postdoctoral research at Ames Laboratory in the United States in 1997 and then worked as a research associate at National Tsing Hua University of Taiwan for two years befor joining Academia Sinica as an assistant associate in 1999. Chen's research concentrates on developing mass spectrometry-based methods to analyze cellular function at the protein level.
一九九七年，陳玉如在美國阿姆斯國家實驗室進行博士後研究。於一九九九年進入中央研究院擔任副研究員之前，她曾在國立清華大學擔任兩年的助理教授。她的研究著重在發展以質譜技術在蛋白質層上分析細胞功能。
