Taipei, Oct. 2 (CNA) A total of 59 athletes representing Taiwan departed for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Argentina after a send-off ceremony presided over by Deputy Education Minister Lin Teng-chiao in Taipei Tuesday.

The third YOG to be held in Buenos Aires from October 6-18 is expected to see teams from 206 countries and areas, with competitors aged 15-18 taking part in a total of 32 competition sports.

Taiwan's 59 athletes are scheduled to compete in 19 of the sports.

Lin noted that although Taiwan performed admirably at the 2017 Taipei Universiade and 2018 Asian Games, he expects the nation's athletes to excel at the YOG as the team is made up of rising stars, with many potential future Asian and Olympic Games medalists.

Lin Hong-dow, president of Taiwan's Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, said that education and cultural exchange are also an important aspect of the YOG and he hopes the athletes showcase Taiwan to the world.

Taiwan won three silver medals at the first YOG in Singapore in 2010 and three golds, five silvers and three bronzes at the second YOG in Nanjing, China, in 2014.
