Taipei, Oct. 2 (CNA) Chien-ming Wang, a former ace pitcher with the New York Yankees, said Monday he was thrilled to learn that a documentary about him had been nominated for a Golden Horse award.
After the film "Late Life: The Chien-ming Wang Story" was nominated Monday for the Golden Horse award for Best Documentary, Wang said he hoped it would inspire young baseball players in Taiwan.
"I'm thrilled and really looking forward to sharing my story with everyone else," said Wang who is in the United States promoting the documentary that features his many comeback attempts and struggles in his professional baseball career.
He said that at first he was "a bit skeptical" when Taiwanese-Canadian director Frank W. Chen approached him about making the documentary.
"That was in 2014, at a time when I was unsure of myself because I was still struggling to make it back to the Majors," Wang said, commending the director, cast and crew for making the documentary possible.
Chen, meanwhile, said his goal was simply to help tell the story of Wang's journey and give everyone a glimpse of what it takes to get back on top.
The documentary about the former Yankees ace pitcher premiered at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival on May 9 and at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival on May 12. It will open in Taiwan cinemas nationwide on Dec. 14.
The ceremony of the 55th Golden Horse Awards, one of the most prestigious film awards in the Chinese-speaking world, is scheduled for Nov. 17 in Taipei.
