Taipei, Aug. 19 (CNA) Dates for a church memorial service and the burial of late President Lee Teng-hui have been decided after discussions with his family during a meeting held at the Presidential Office in Taipei on Wednesday, according to presidential spokesman Xavier Chang.
The memorial service will be held at the chapel of Aletheia University in New Taipei on Sept. 19, during which President Tsai Ing-wen will honor Lee by awarding him a posthumous presidential citation, Chang noted.
On Oct. 7, Lee's ashes will be buried in a state funeral at Wuzhi Mountain Military Cemetery, in an area reserved for people who have made significant contributions to Taiwan's development, the spokesman said.
In addition, official buildings will fly the national flag at half-mast on the day of the state funeral, he said.
Members of Lee's family, including his two daughters and a granddaughter, met with Vice President Lai Ching-te, who chairs a committee comprising current and former senior officials to plan the late president's burial, Chang said.
According to Chang, members of the committee include Premier Su Tseng-chang, Legislative Speaker You Si-kun , Judicial Yuan President Hsu Tzong-li Control Yuan President Chen Chu and Examination Yuan President Huang Jong-tsun.
Former vice presidents Lien Chan and Vincent Siew, and former Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng , who are among the former senior officials when Lee was in office, are also on the committee, according to Chang.
Lee's family held a private funeral on Aug. 14, after which his body was cremated.
The former president died at the age of 97 on July 30 at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, after being hospitalized for over five months.
