Taipei, Sept. 30 (CNA) A burial service will be held on Oct. 7 for former President Lee Teng-hui, during which his ashes will be interred at a military cemetery in New Taipei, the Presidential Office said Wednesday.
Out of respect for the wishes of Lee's family, the interment ceremony at the Wuzhi Mountain Military Cemetery will not be open to the public, according to the Presidential Office.
On that day, national flags at state and public facilities will be flown at half-staff, the office said.
Lee's funeral procession On Oct. 7 is slated to set off from his family residence in Taipei at around 8:20 a.m. and reach the military cemetery at around 9:20 a.m., where a burial service organized by the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan will take place.
During the memorial service, President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Lai Ching-te will lead a number of high ranking officials in paying their last respects to Lee.
Lee's ashes will then be interred at the military cemetery with troops firing a three volley salute to bid a final farewell to Taiwan's first directly elected president.
The burial service is expected to end at 10:20 a.m., according to the Presidential Office.
A rehearsal for the funeral is scheduled on Oct. 6.
Lee, dubbed "Mr. Democracy," passed away on July 30 at the age of 97. He was Taiwan's first democratically elected president and played a crucial role in the country's transition from authoritarianism to democracy.
