Taipei, Jan. 18 (CNA) Taiwan has 13 companies named among the world's 100 leading technology companies by mass media and information firm Thomson Reuters Corp., with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) ranked seventh, making it the only Asian company among the top 10.

The Canadian-based company published its inaugural "Top 100 Global Technology Leaders" list Wednesday, with Microsoft Corp. in the No. 1 spot, followed by chipmaker Intel Corp. and network equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc.

Rounding out the top 10 are IBM, Alphabet Inc. (parent company of Google), Apple Inc., TSMC, German business software giant SAP, Texas Instruments Inc. and Dublin-based consultant Accenture.

The list is aimed at identifying the industry's top financially successful and organizationally sound organizations, according to Thomson Reuters.

According to the list, 45 percent of the top 100 tech companies are headquartered in the United States. Japan and Taiwan are tied for second place with 13 companies each, followed by India with five of its tech leaders on the list.

The remaining 90 companies are not ranked, but the list also includes the world's largest online retailer -- Amazon.com Inc. -- and social media giant Facebook Inc., according to Thomson Reuters.

The results are based on a 28-factor algorithm that measures performance across eight benchmarks: financial, management and investor confidence, risk and resilience, legal compliance, innovation, people and social responsibility, environmental impact, and reputation.

The tech companies eligible for listing are restricted to those that have at least US$1 billion in annual revenue, according to Thomson Reuters.
