Taipei, April 11 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen is scheduled to make an inspection tour Friday of a naval base in Su'ao, Yilan County, where she will observe a military drill focusing on testing the military's emergency response ability in defense of harbors, the Ministry of National Defense said in a statement released Wednesday.

During the inspection, Tsai will take to the waves aboard a warship for the first time since she took office in May 2016.

In light of the volatile international and regional security situation, Tsai will observe the drill in her capacity as commander-in-chief of the Republic of China (Taiwan) armed forces to gain a first-hand understanding of the military's combat readiness, its ability to defend the country's national territory, and the measures taken to ensure national security, according to the statement.
