Taipei, Nov. 2 (CNA) Japan-based Taiwanese professional go player Cho U beat defending champion Yuta Iyama in the Meijin tournament final in Japan on Friday, reclaiming the title he lost to Iyama in 2009.
Cho, holding white stones, took down Iyama on the 271st move in the decisive seventh game of the two-day match in Shizuoka Prefecture. In reclaiming the title, he won a prize of 33 million Japanese yen (US$290,000) with four victories in the seven-game final competition.
It was the 38-year-old Cho's fifth Meijin title, and also his first win in six years in one of the seven major go tournaments in Japan -- Kisei, Meijin, Honinbo, Judan, Tengen, Gosei and Oza.
Iyama, 29, became the first player in Japanese history in April 2016 to hold all seven major titles simultaneously. In January 2018, he became the first professional go player to receive the People's Honor Award given by Japan's government.
