Manila, Jan. 16 (CNA) An organization funded by Taiwan's Ministry of Education has opened a Chinese language teaching course at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Wednesday, for the first time since the university's establishment over 100 year's ago.
Lee Cheng-han, education secretary with Taiwan's representative office in Manila, and Huang Tse-hsiang, manager of the program, attended the opening ceremony for the classes, which was organized by the Taiwan Education Center Philippines.
Speaking about the program, Huang said "the course lasts for two months and aims to train students to become future Chinese language teachers, so that more Filipino students can learn Chinese."
It is also the first time the PUP has held a Chinese language teaching course since its founding in 1904, reflecting its great significance, Lee said, adding that as many as 20 professors and lecturers have signed up for the course, Lee said.
Operated by Taiwan's National Sun Yat-sen University commissioned by the Ministry of Education, the Taiwan Education Center Philippines was set up in September 2017 in Manila to promote quality Chinese language education in the Southeast Asian country.
The center also offers courses to train local Chinese language instructors and promote educational and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
