Taiwan is planning to open 20 more Centers for Mandarin Learning in the United States and European Union. That was the word from Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) Vice Minister Roy Lu on Thursday in an interview with RTI.

Lu also shared how the US and Taiwan are working together to help Taiwan become a bilingual nation. The two countries have signed the US-Taiwan Education Initiative, which includes plans for the US to send specialists to Taiwan to upgrade its English environment.

The OCAC sponsors annual programs that bring about 2,000 young people to Taiwan to teach English to elementary and junior high students. It also holds seminars and programs that see about 3,000 overseas Taiwanese returning to participate. National Day celebrations are also a big draw for Taiwan’s overseas citizens, and usually 6,000 come back every year, said Lu.

Lu said that the Taiwanese diaspora has played an important role in increasing Taiwan’s visibility abroad and in helping Taiwan during difficult times. He cited the diaspora’s eagerness to buy Taiwanese pineapples and pineapple products when China blocked imports of these products, hurting Taiwan’s farmers.

With the strong support of the diaspora, Taiwan is not alone in the world, Lu said. Whether it’s through buying Taiwanese products, supporting their favorite political candidate, or eating Taiwanese cuisine, the diaspora is eager to show how much it cares about Taiwan.
