To promote traditional character Mandarin to mainstream society overseas, the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) assisted 18 overseas compatriot schools in establishing Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) in 2021. In coordination, on January 17, the new Huayuworld.org- Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning bilingual website was introduced, allowing overseas users to conveniently obtain information about centers, Mandarin teaching materials and other related information.
With the number of people studying Mandarin in Europe and North America increasing by the year and in line with the promotion of the Taiwan-US Education Initiative, the OCAC drew up the Program for the Establishment of TCML to take advantage of the opportunity to expand the overseas Mandarin market by assisting overseas compatriot schools in the US and Europe in establishing TCML to serve as important bases for Mandarin study by local people aged 18 and over and for the promotion of Mandarin learning with Taiwanese characteristics. In 2021, 18 such centers were established, with 15 in the US and one each in the UK, Germany and France. 27 centers will be established in 2022, reaching totally 45.
To further coordinate with the aforementioned policy direction, the OCAC set about planning the optimization of English information on the Huayuworld.org website in the second half of 2021 and, on January 17, 2022 the Huayuworld.org- Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning bilingual website was officially introduced. Its diverse contents include introductions and course characteristics of each of the centers in the US and Europe, teaching materials developed by the OCAC that are suitable for foreign learners, and information about activities organized by the OCAC. The contents of the website will be continually supplemented in future. The aim is to provide a channel for international friends to obtain information related to Mandarin study and expand the audience of Huayuworld.org.
