Taipei, Jan. 1 (CNA) Central and local governments are set to hold national flag raising ceremonies around Taiwan on Sunday to mark New Year's Day, which is also the beginning of the 112th year of the Republic of China, which was formally founded in 1912.
Hundreds began arriving at the site of the ceremony in front of the Presidential Office in Taipei before 5 a.m., to watch performances by Taipei high school marching bands and the Armed Forces before the flag raising ceremony at 6:30 a.m.
The ceremony is held with the theme "Together, we can."
President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and Vice President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) appeared at the ceremony shortly before 6:30 a.m.
The president is scheduled to deliver a New Year's Day speech later in the morning.
Following the flag raising ceremony, the Presidential Office will be open to the public from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. that day.
People planning to visit the historical building and the free exhibitions inside can join the line at 9:15 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. at the intersection of Bo'ai Road and Baoching Road.
The Presidential Office is open to visitors most weekday mornings.
