The Executive Yuan's Department of Gender Equality is delighted to report that Taiwan has ranked second in its first ever inclusion in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI), placing behind only Belgium in the 2023 edition of the index, which surveyed 179 countries and territories.

The Department of Gender Equality stated that the SIGI was launched by the OECD Development Centre in 2009 and measures discrimination in social institutions against women and girls across several major areas affecting their lives. Taiwan's top-ranking performance is thanks firstly to eliminating laws, social norms and practices related to discrimination in the family; secondly to improving access to productive and financial resources; and thirdly to improving civil liberties. In each of these three dimensions, Taiwan surpassed the average score of surveyed countries, whether worldwide, among OECD members, or in Asia.
