Taichung, July 19 (CNA) Cloud Gate Dance Theatre will hold a free outdoor performance of "13 Tongues" in front of Taichung City Hall on Saturday evening, the first open-air performance it has held in the city in 10 years, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) said.
People in central Taiwan should not miss Saturday's free open-air show by Cloud Gate -- one of the best known Taiwanese performing arts groups in the world -- Lu said at press conference on Wednesday.
Cloud Gate performed founder Lin Hwai-min's (林懷民) work "Legacy" at National Taichung Theater in early May during a six-city tour to mark the dance troupe's 50th anniversary, said Lu, adding that she found the 1978 piece very moving.
The last time Cloud Gate gave an open-air performance was when the troupe celebrated its 40th anniversary with Lin's "Rice," said Cloud Gate Artistic Director Cheng Tsung-lung (鄭宗龍) at the press conference in Taichung.
Everyone is welcomed to see "13 Tongues," a 2016 piece by Cheng that incorporates many elements of local life in Taiwan, such as folk songs and religious rituals, the choreographer said.
"13 Tongues" has toured Europe and the United States, and will be performed in France and Spain later this year, according to Cloud Gate.
The free performance will start at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in Taichung, and Cloud Gate will also hold a family-friendly event on Friday where parents and children are welcome to dance together, according to the troupe.
