Under the warm March sun, members of the San Diego Chapter of the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors (FASCA-SD) gathered for a monthly meeting filled with cultural enrichment and practical knowledge. The day was a perfect mix of revisiting traditional Taiwanese toys and preparing for future college life.
The event kicked off with a team building activity that brought everyone closer, filling the room with laughter and cheers. Then, the highlight of the day—the diabolo workshop—began. Led by instructor Michael Chen, participants split into beginner and advanced groups. Beginners focused on mastering basic skills like spinning, throwing, and catching, while the advanced group tackled more complex tricks such as the "spiderweb" and "leg toss." The session ended with members tossing and catching each other's diabolos, creating a mix of tension and excitement. It wasn’t just a skill-sharing activity but also a team-building experience that deepened everyone’s connection to Taiwanese culture.
In the afternoon, the focus shifted to college preparation. The panel discussion featured FASCA-SD high school seniors alongside two guest speakers—Richard Tseng from Santa Clara University and Grace Tseng from UC Irvine. The panel shared invaluable insights into the college application process and campus life, offering a well-rounded perspective for the audience.
As the day wound down, FASCA-SD presidents led a reflection session. Members reviewed recent events, such as the Lunar New Year Festival at the San Diego Chinese Academy, and brainstormed ideas for future activities. The meeting also included a re-election for the Course Planning Captain role, with Evan Chen stepping into the position.
FASCA-SD Consulting Mentor Irene Wang wrapped up the day with heartfelt words: "Today’s activities showed us how cultural learning and personal growth can go hand in hand. The diabolo workshop not only brought everyone closer to Taiwanese culture but also strengthened teamwork and perseverance. Meanwhile, the college preparation session provided practical guidance for the future."
The March meeting was more than just an event—it was a day of laughter, learning, and inspiration. FASCA-SD continues to root itself in cultural heritage while nurturing growth, guiding each member toward a brighter and broader future.
