The Taiwanese Business Association of New Zealand – South Island (TBANZ South Island) hosted a special screening of HERO! HITO! on Saturday, 31 October 2026, in Christchurch. Held simultaneously with the Auckland screening, the event brought together Taiwanese communities from across both the North and South Islands to celebrate one of the most memorable milestones in Taiwan’s sporting history.
The documentary chronicles the remarkable journey of Taiwan’s national baseball team as they rose to become world champions at the 2024 WBSC Premier12 tournament. Looking back at Taiwan’s heartbreaking defeat against Japan in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, the film traces the team’s eleven-year path toward redemption and glory.
Under the leadership of manager Tseng Hao-chiu, a new generation of players—supported by former players returning as coaches—embarked on a demanding campaign. Despite being widely regarded as underdogs and ranked near the bottom in pre-tournament predictions, the team showcased extraordinary grit and synergy. They overcame formidable opponents and an exhausting schedule, culminating in a historic victory over Japan at the Tokyo Dome to secure Taiwan’s first-ever Premier12 championship.
The screening was made possible through the generous sponsorship of National Policy Advisor Jason Lin (Chien-Sung Lin), who funded the acquisition of the film’s screening rights. His support allowed the Taiwanese community in New Zealand to experience this inspiring story on the big screen and take pride in Taiwan’s historic achievement. TBANZ South Island extends its heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Lin for his vital contribution.
A major highlight of the day was the live link between Auckland and Christchurch. Special thanks go to Leon Lee, President of the Taiwanese Business Association of New Zealand – Auckland, for coordinating the joint dual-island event. Despite the physical distance between the two cities, attendees connected via live stream to exchange warm greetings with their peers in Auckland, fostering a shared nationwide celebration.
To mark the occasion, champagne was poured for a celebratory toast. Guests in Christchurch raised their glasses in tandem with the Auckland venue, united in the excitement and pride of Taiwan’s triumph.
Through this synchronized event, Taiwanese residents in Auckland and Christchurch shared the same emotional highs. More than just a film screening, it was a meaningful gathering that deepened cultural identity, connection, and collective pride among overseas Taiwanese.
Distinguished guests at the Christchurch gathering included Hank Chu, President of TBANZ South Island; Richard Wu, Vice President of TBANZ South Island; Michelle Lai, Immediate Past President of the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Oceania; and Tim Dai of the Christchurch Hwa-Hsing Society. Their presence underscored their ongoing support for both the initiative and the local Taiwanese community.
