Tsai Chin-chiang, secretary-general of the COA's Agriculture and Food Agency, noted that the watermelon production areas in Taiwan cover around 12,000 hectares, with annual production of around 300,000 tons of the fruit.
Taiwan boasts more than a dozen varieties of watermelon, and the fruit is available all year round. This year will be another bumper year for the fruit, he added.
He said Taiwan has also developed different shapes of watermelon.
