On February 5, 2025, Pretoria Chinese School (PCS) successfully hosted a Study Abroad Information Session, providing students and their families with valuable insights into international education opportunities. The event featured expert presentations on scholarship applications, university admissions processes, and inspiring success stories from outstanding alumni, encouraging students to pursue their dreams of global learning.
Focus on Study Opportunities in Taiwan
The event commenced with a warm welcome from Ms. Angela Liu, Deputy Principal of the Chinese Department at PCS. Mr. Tim Wen, Secretary at the Taipei Liaison Office in South Africa, delivered a comprehensive presentation on Taiwan’s prestigious scholarship programs, including the MOE Taiwan Scholarship and the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship, emphasizing that applications are open from February 1 to March 31, 2025.
Following this, Mr. Richard Wang, Secretary at the Taipei Liaison Office, and Mr. Benson Yang, Immigration Attaché, provided a detailed overview of visa application procedures and entry regulations. They offered crucial advice to help students navigate the administrative process smoothly before studying in Taiwan.
Taiwan's Higher Education and Scholarship Opportunities
PCS teacher Mrs. Cathy Lee introduced the Taiwan Higher Education Online Expo, an informative platform provided by the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students. She guided attendees on how to use this resource to explore academic programs and application procedures. Mrs. Lee also stressed the importance of reaching out to Mr. Evan Tseng at the Taipei Liaison Office for students interested in applying for the Top and Outstanding Overseas Compatriot Student Scholarships, with all necessary documentation due before the end of March.
The event also highlighted Taiwan’s leading educational institutions. Taipei Medical University (TMU) was introduced as a top-ranking university offering a variety of master's and doctoral programs in medical sciences. As all undergraduate programs at TMU are taught in Chinese, proficiency in the language is required. Students were also provided with detailed pamphlets on scholarship and financial aid options. Meanwhile, Nanhua University was presented as another strong option, known for its holistic approach to education and diverse academic offerings.
Alumni Stories Inspire Future Global Learners
A highlight of the evening was the alumni sharing session, where PCS graduates currently studying abroad shared their experiences. Mr. Oratile Mampuru, an undergraduate student in Global Studies at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), offered valuable insights through a video interview conducted by Ms. Nyara Chirima, a teacher at PCS. His story served as motivation for prospective students considering overseas education.
Empowering Students for a Borderless Future
The Study Abroad Information Session proved to be an invaluable platform, equipping South African students with essential knowledge and guidance on international education pathways. By emphasizing critical application deadlines, showcasing Taiwan’s prestigious universities, and sharing real-life success stories, PCS reaffirmed its commitment to preparing students for a future without borders.
