Taipei, Oct. 3 (CNA) Taiwanese singer-songwriter Waa Wei defeated six other nominees to take home her first Best Female Mandarin Vocalist Award for the album "Hidden, Not Forgotten" at the 31st Golden Melody Awards in Taipei Saturday.
The 11-track album displays a mature sound with detailed vocals, according to the jury.
In addition to hosting this year's awards ceremony, Wei also received a total of six nods for the album and individual tracks, including album of the year and best Mandarin album.
In her first best female vocalist win, Wei was up against Joanna Wang for "Love is Calling Me," Fish Leong for "The Sun Also Rises," G.E.M. for "City Zoo," Peggy Hsu for "Hypnocity," and Naiwen Yang for "The More Beautiful, The More Invisible."
"Thank you for all the people who stuck with me through all these years," Wei said during her acceptance speech.
Since her solo debut release "One" in 1997, Wei has released a total of six albums.
The Golden Melody Awards was established in 1990 with the goal of promoting and recognizing excellence in the local music industry.
The awards ceremony is usually held in May or June, but was postponed until Oct. 3 because of the country's social distancing and crowd management regulations at the time due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
